About the Project
With a design based on circular geometries inspired by Walter Burley Griffin's plan for Canberra, renowned architecture practice Bates Smart has unveiled Australia's newest hotel in the nation's capital.
The Canberra Vibe Hotel features a striking circular form adjacent to the airport approach, creating a bold, landmark entry that tapers towards the award-winning Canberra Airport.
The 4.5-star hotel developed by Canberra Airport Corporation features 191 rooms including 12 suites and 9 apartments over six levels and includes a reception, conferencing facilities, restaurant, bar and lounge areas.
Situated adjacent to the new terminal, the building is centred on a dramatic full height circular atrium that draws references from Griffin's plan for Canberra as well as alluding to Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim Museum. The spectacular atrium is the signature space for the hotel with its striking black and white theme rising above a large-scale ground floor entertaining space.
This atrium caters for intimate gatherings as well as large-scale events. It then draws the eye upward to where circular skylights bring-in light during the day and create a constellation at night. The circular references are highlighted through a number of light pelmets and bulkhead details. The beautiful colours of the walnut timber feather panelling along with bronze and gold aluminium make this a very warm, eye-opening area.
It was a great experience to build, design and be a part of this project. J&J are particularly proud of the end product and our involvement in achieving the desired outcomes for the client.
J&J Interiors were proud winners in the MBA Excellence in Building Awards 2016 for Best Use of Material - Interior Commerical for this project.
